Successful Values-based Leaders

What is Values-Based Leadership?

Values-based leadership is an active commitment to stated values.

Values-based leaders serve people, social issues, and the environment.  They support their organization’s foundational guiding principles to promote fairness, openness, and trust.  Values-based leaders support individual and societal growth, innovation, and performance.

Today’s workforce is attracted to organizations that incorporate values-based leadership.  Why?  We believe that motivated employees want to serve organizations whose values align with their own.

For many decades, senior management’s hiring practices assessed candidates on their education, social skills, and perceived business knowledge.  Scant attention was paid to job candidates’ values and their commitment to serve others.  Interestingly, those who had served in the military were desirable candidates as leaders.  It was assumed they had learned and adopted values of respect, integrity, service to others, and courage.

For many years, corporations have not perceived a pressing need to develop company-wide values-based leadership as part of their employee growth, DEI and Succession Planning initiatives.  About 25 years ago, Boards of Directors and graduate schools began to include servant and values-based leadership principles in case study discussions.  Prior to that, leadership service and ethics had been ignored – often with catastrophic outcomes.

Values-based leadership principles build character and leadership traits.  These traits generate meaningful employee cultural inclusion in the workplace and build customer trust.

Benefits of Values-Based Leadership

Character and leadership embody different traits.  When these traits are combined, values-based leaders provide others with a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and an ability to shine.

Throughout history, military leaders gained fame with their character and leadership.  Corporate leaders are not at war, but they are, in fact, in a battle to win the hearts and minds of employees, customers, and the community, at large.
